The neighborhoods in which Americans live impact our lives in ways both obvious and subtle. They influence our social networks, our access to resources, and the opportunities available to us. Robust research shows that the neighborhood into which a child is born can also have a profound effect on later life, impacting health, academic achievement, and lifetime income.

Fragile Neighborhoods: Repairing American Society, One Zip Code at a Time is the latest book from Seth D. Kaplan, a professor of international studies at John Hopkins University and an expert on fragile states whose background includes work at the World Bank and the U.S. State Department. In this book, he offers an engaging exploration of social poverty and decline in America, as well as a new vision for revitalizing the communities and institutions that underpin a strong social fabric. He also includes several examples of individuals and organizations pioneering new approaches to strengthening social institutions, as well as an array of practical suggestions for those wishing to get involved.

Join us for a discussion of Fragile Neighborhoods with Seth Kaplan, as we dive into the research behind this thoughtful new book.
