Rural America is diverse—with unique assets, challenges, economies, and communities. But like most of America, rural households are increasingly facing housing insecurity and high housing cost burdens, while also grappling with more severely substandard housing conditions and limited access to credit. Senators Tina Smith (D-MN) and Mike Rounds (R-SD) are the Chair and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development. In 2019, they formed the bipartisan Senate “Rural Economic Working Group,” to highlight what’s working in rural America, lift up local ideas, and work in a bipartisan manner to support rural communities and their revitalization. Join us for a conversation exploring their ideas and priorities for rural housing and opportunities for bipartisan collaboration this Congress.
