Statement from BPC President Jason Grumet on RNC Threat to Pull Out of 2024 Presidential Debates

Washington, DC – The premise of our democracy is not to “get along,” but to constructively engage our political and policy differences. While light years from perfection, the most visible and consequential expression of this idea is the presidential debates. Since the first televised debates in 1960, general election debates have been a cornerstone in our political process. It would be the height of absurdity if the Commission on Presidential Debates, Republican National Committee, and Democratic National Committee cannot resolve a debate about presidential debates.

Today’s assertion by the RNC is counterproductive, a disservice to the American electorate, and at odds with the interest of the nominees. We encourage the RNC to rescind the assertions made today and recommit to the best process voters have to take the measure of those vying to lead our nation.
