Statement on the Passing of Former Rep. Sam Johnson

The following is a statement from Jason Grumet, president of the Bipartisan Policy Center, on the death of former Rep. Sam Johnson of Texas, a recipient of BPC’s Patriot Award:

“Sam Johnson was a decorated war hero and dedicated public servant praised by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle for his collegiality and commitment to getting things done, especially on ensuring the health and solvency of Social Security.

“BPC had the privilege of recognizing Johnson, alongside his colleague Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), as our first Patriot Award recipient. The award celebrates lawmakers who demonstrate extraordinary courage and leadership in their public service. Johnson certainly fit that bill, not only in his political career but in his brave and honorable service in both Korea and Vietnam, where he spent seven years as a prisoner of war.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his many friends still serving in Congress.”
