Panel to Discuss Threats to Retirement Security on November 20: Policies, Plans and Problems

Monday, November 17, 2014

Washington, D.C. – What would you do if you ran out of savings during retirement?

While many Americans’ number one financial worry remains their ability to prepare for retirement, there are increasing worries of making sure those savings last through longer retirements, which may include the need for expensive long-term services and supports (LTSS).

On Thursday, November 20, the Bipartisan Policy Center’s (BPC) Commission on Retirement Security and Personal Savings and Long-Term Care Initiative will host an event to discuss how LTSS needs, the risk of outliving savings and pre-retirement withdrawals can make a financially secure retirement more difficult to achieve. The panelists will also be examining potential solutions to these problems, including expanded use of annuities and long-term care insurance and reforms to the public programs like Social Security and Medicaid that help mitigate these risks.

Former Sen. Kent Conrad, the Honorable Jim Lockhart, Research Director of Employee Benefit Research Institute Jack VanDerhei and former Director of the Congressional Budget Office Alice Rivlin will introduce a panel moderated by the President of National Academy of Social Insurance Larry Atkins.

The event is open to the public and press. Media wishing to attend the event should register here.
