Washington, D.C. – Governor Jack Markell will announce a Partnership for Higher Standards with the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) Governors’ Council and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation – Along with former Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, who will represent BPC, and Cheryl Oldham, Vice President for Education Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Governor will launch an initiative to support the goals of the Common Core State Standards. Countering opposition by some groups to Common Core, this partnership will promote the importance of higher education standards, while also helping states across the country inform the public and apply best practices to most effectively implement high standards and boost student achievement in their schools.
The group will first visit classes at Lancashire Elementary School to observe English and Math lessons that have been influenced by the more rigorous requirements of Common Core. This will be followed by a press conference, which will be live streamed here: http://new.livestream.com/StateofDelaware/events/2820434.
This effort was previewed last month in an op-ed by Governor Markell and former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, a member of the BPC Governors’ Council. Markell and Perdue co-chaired the Common Core initiative.
