Grumet: Speaker Boehner Showed Statesmanship in Trying Times

Friday, September 25, 2015

Washington, D.C.– Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet issued the following statement in response to House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) announcement that he will resign from Congress next month:

“Speaker Boehner has been a pragmatic and graceful leader during turbulent times. In more than 20 years in Congress, Speaker Boehner has demonstrated a unique ability to solve problems without compromising principles. In the spirit of constructive partisanship, Speaker Boehner has led his caucus in successful efforts to reduce federal budget deficits, advance free trade, end the Medicare ‘doc fix’ and reform education and pension laws.

“I commend the Speaker’s concerted efforts to improve the legislative process by returning power to congressional committees and encouraging civility and deliberation in the face of intense polarization on the left and right.

“Speaker Boehner has been a true statesman in trying times. He will be missed.”
