BPC's Schweer on Cassidy-Hassan Paid Family Leave Working Group

Washington, D.C.– The following is a statement from Adrienne Schweer, a fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center, on the news that Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) will lead a Senate Finance Committee working group on paid family leave:

“Today’s announcement is a win for families. Americans today face significant challenges when it comes to balancing work and family. One in four American mothers returns to work within two weeks of giving birth, and more than 80 percent of workers lack access to paid parental and caregiver leave.

“BPC believes a national paid family leave program has powerful potential to address these needs. To make smart, durable progress, Congress needs to explore lessons learned from the states, industry, and other efforts to work together on federal solutions.

“BPC stands ready to help Cassidy and Hassan as they lead this critical working group. It’s time to get this done.”
