BPC’s Matthew Weil Condemns Push for ‘Election Police’

Washington, DC – The Bipartisan Policy Center’s Elections Project Director Matthew Weil released the below statement following the recent push in some GOP-controlled states to establish ‘election police:’

“Election funding is historically hard to come by for local and state election officials and each budget cycle is a fight to secure the resources needed to administer free and fair elections,” said Weil. “That’s what makes recent moves in Florida and elsewhere so frustrating. Here comes a legislature and governor willing to throw millions of dollars of taxpayer money and additional bureaucracy at a problem that election officials in their own state say they have under control. Democracy is too important for political posturing.”

BPC’s Elections Project recently published two reports, Policy to Advance Good Faith Election Observation and Prioritizing Achievable Federal Election Reform, which identify solutions for combating election fraud through election observation and providing adequate funding for elections through federal election reform, respectively.
