Washington, D.C.– Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet issued the following statement on the Senate Energy Policy Modernization Act.

“Since passage of the last energy bill almost a decade ago, American innovation has dramatically improved the ways we produce, use and save energy. The Energy Policy Modernization Act establishes a foundation to secure the economic, environmental and security benefits that flow from these remarkable technological advances. The Bipartisan Policy Center applauds Senators Murkowski and Cantwell for leading a substantive and deliberative effort despite the challenges of election-year politics. We urge members to work through the last remaining issues and pass the Energy Policy Modernization Act.

“The bill strengthens U.S. energy policy and promotes economic growth by reauthorizing key components of the America COMPETES Act. By supporting the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and ARPA-E, the legislation provides essential funding for the next generation of energy breakthroughs. These programs, along with the successful amendment supporting nuclear energy innovation, generate significant dividends to our national economic, energy security and environmental interests.

“The bill will also drive improvements in energy efficiency, enhance infrastructure and create demonstration programs that will modernize the grid and accelerate progress in energy storage. Finally, the legislation enhances public and private collaboration with improved decision-making processes for LNG exports and hydropower permitting.

“The Energy Policy Modernization Act makes important strides to capture and manage the incredible benefits of American ingenuity and our abundant natural resources. The Bipartisan Policy Center commends Senator Murkowski and Senator Cantwell for their foresight and leadership.”
