BPC’s Grumet: Refreshing Reflections from Pope Francis

Thursday, September 24, 2015

Washington, D.C. – The following statement is from Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet after His Holiness Pope Francis spoke before Congress.

“Today, Pope Francis has challenged, transcended and upended the usual partisan lines of American politics. In recent years, increasing expectations of party loyalty have created a rigid partisan stance that fails to capture the diversity and complexity of most Americans’ political views.

“If on balance you are a Republican or a Democrat, you are expected to align with all party policy preferences and can expect rebuke for expressions of independence. This rigidity is particularly required and rewarded in the presidential primary process and it is a barrier to public policy that reflects the input and interests from a majority of Americans.

“In this most tribal of political seasons, one can’t help but marvel at the Pope’s ability to at once inspire and confound by raising issues that together do not fall simply along one side of the political aisle or the other. His call to rise above polarization is one that should be heeded.”
