BPC President and CEO Margaret Spellings: Congress Must Stay Focused on Averting a Shutdown 

Statement from Margaret Spellings, president and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center, on the 2024 appropriations agreement to avert a government shutdown:

 “With the House and Senate expected to take the next steps to debate the fiscal agreement worked out by congressional leaders, I encourage lawmakers to get this across the finish line as soon as possible. A partial or full federal government shutdown would create additional uncertainty for our economy and unnecessarily impact hard-working Americans. We must also get beyond these crisis points by returning to regular order and improve the budget process moving forward. We also know that a $34 trillion national debt is not sustainable. BPC stands ready to help policymakers to fund the government through the current fiscal year, while also addressing our long-term fiscal health.”
