BPC Applauds Bipartisan Efforts on DACA and Border in the Lame Duck

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Theresa Cardinal Brown, Bipartisan Policy Center managing director of immigration and cross-border policy, on news of bipartisan negotiations between Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) and Thom Tillis (R-NC) around immigration reform this lame duck session:

“We are pleased to see bipartisan efforts to address long-needed fixes to our immigration system, including providing legal status to Dreamers and addressing border security. As Sens. Sinema and Tillis iron out the details of a framework, we encourage members of both parties to engage constructively to get legislation passed this lame duck session.

“There may be any number of reasons for members and stakeholders from both sides of the aisle to stall on a deal, but making concessions on the border in exchange for protections for Dreamers is the only path forward on either issue, as the Bipartisan Policy Center has said for five years now. The efforts of both senators to solve the dual crises of DACA and the border should be celebrated and pursued until passage is secured.”
