Training Health Professionals to Combat Obesity

Friday, December 15, 2017

BPC’s health series looks at the importance of training health care professionals in obesity care and counseling. Sadly, obesity counseling is not a major focus in the training and educating of our current and future health care providers. To address this knowledge gap, a dozen organizations representing numerous health care professions released the first-ever educational competencies for the prevention and treatment of obesity.

Two members of the working group who produced this report, Dr. William Dietz with the Sumner Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness and Lisa Howley with the Association of American Medical Colleges, join BPC Senior Advisor Joann Donnellan to provide an overview of the competencies and what they could mean to patients who struggle with obesity.
