Cantwell F. Muckenfuss III co-chairs BPC’s Systemic Risk Task Force. He is currently a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he focuses on the representation of financial institutions in matters involving financial regulation and public policy.

Before joining the firm in 1981, Muckenfuss was senior deputy comptroller for policy at the office of the comptroller of the currency (1978-81) and special assistant to the director (1974-77), and counsel to the chairman (1977-78) of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. In 1979, he received the Department of the Treasury Special Achievement Award, and in 1980, he was awarded the Presidential Rank Award.

Muckenfuss is a founder, member, and chairman of the board of directors of City First Bank of D.C., N.A., a community development bank in Washington, D.C. He is also a member or chair of other advisory boards.

Muckenfuss received degrees from Vanderbilt University and Yale Law School.
