Join the Urban Institute and the Bipartisan Policy Center for a discussion about using data and evaluation evidence in federal decision making.

As federal agencies take steps to improve how they produce evidence, it is vital to understand how that evidence can be used.

Agencies are responding to calls from the administration and congressional leaders to strengthen their capacity to conduct formal evaluations, manage performance, and integrate data. The administration’s budget proposals and priorities, the 2017 report of the bipartisan Commission on Evidence-Based Policymaking, and the recently passed Congressional Bipartisan Budget Act include important evidence and performance provisions.

Our panel of experts answer the following questions about using credible and rigorous evidence and analysis in making appropriate data-driven and evidence-based decisions: How is evidence being used in federal decision making? How can evidence be used in the future, and what additional evidence is needed? What are the challenges and opportunities in evidence-based decision making?
