In March, Purdue Pharma agreed to pay $270 million to the state of Oklahoma in the first state settlement of litigation stemming from the opioid epidemic. There are more than 1,600 other cases pending across the United States. As more of these cases head towards possible settlement agreements, public health experts are weighing in on the best use of these funds to respond to the ongoing crisis. Additionally, there may be parallels to the 1998 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement which continues to provide payments to states.
