The modern Congress has faced major shifts in the political landscape, technology and society’s expectations for representation. Just as the wider world has changed dramatically in the last 100 years, so too has Congress, even while some of its traditions and practices have remained intact. Understanding these developments is essential to understanding the future of the institution and its ability to address the domestic and international challenges that lie ahead.

For its centennial celebration, the Congressional Research Service analyzed important trends and influences, both external and internal, in the evolution of the institution over the last many decades in its report, The Evolving Congress. The result is a comprehensive assessment of how and why Congress evolved over the previous decades to where it is today.

The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and the National Capital Area Political Science Association hosted a distinguished panel to hear perspectives and insights into the future of the legislative branch and its policymaking process.
