In the aftermath of Turkey’s April presidential referendum, many commentators declared the end of Turkish democracy. More recently, a much publicized attack by Turkish presidential bodyguards on protesters in Washington brought home to many Americans just how brutal Erdogan’s government has become.

With US-Turkish relations as tense as ever, how can the United States respond? Does Turkish society have any hope of reversing the country’s authoritarian slide, and if so, what role can Washington play?
