What Is Europe Doing on ESG? What Does It Mean for the U.S.?

What is Europe doing on ESG? That question is being increasingly asked by U.S. policymakers and corporate leaders—especially as the latter try to figure out how European Union requirements on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors affect them.

The EU has set forth a variety of directives, standards, and regulations on ESG disclosure. It has also moved toward a new definition of what is “material” in such disclosure by companies. Some EU countries have also proposed regulating ESG ratings providers and other third-party entities that investors rely on. Many observers agree that the EU is further along in the policy debates than the U.S. and thus may ultimately influence how the SEC, Congress, and other government agencies respond. Other jurisdictions across the world are also moving forward on ESG regulation.

It is thus crucial that U.S. policymakers and corporate leaders have a grasp of what Europe is doing and what the implications could be for America. Join the Bipartisan Policy Center as we discuss ESG activity in the EU, what’s next, and how it may impact U.S. companies and policymakers as they evaluate their own disclosure frameworks
