Since Dwight Eisenhower last wore a uniform, jets fly faster, soldiers can see at night, and bombs are dropped within inches of their target. One area that hasn’t changed is the way the Pentagon manages its most important asset—its people. The excellence of the U.S. military depends on the quality of the people who choose to serve, but can the military attract the talent it needs to protect the nation against future threats? As defense reform takes center stage in this year’s defense authorization, one area most in need of reform is the Defense Department’s myriad personnel management systems.
BPC launched the Task Force on Defense Personnel to find out why the systems that have managed our military for over 30 years are no longer capable of maintaining America’s military advantage.
