Nearly 60 million Americans—about 1 in 5—live in rural communities and depend on rural hospitals for health care. These facilities face growing financial strain, and in 2025, several key Medicare programs that provide critical support are set to expire. At the same time, rural hospitals are navigating new pressures tied to rising participation in Medicare Advantage.

The Bipartisan Policy Center recently released a report on rural emergency hospitals and will soon release recommendations on Medicare’s hospital payment structures. Both explore how federal policy can better support rural care delivery.

Join BPC on May 13 for a timely conversation on preserving access to rural hospital care and strengthening long-term stability in underserved communities.
