Federal spending exceeded $3.6 trillion in the fiscal year just ended. At the same time agencies must manage under constrained resources. Finding efficiencies, savings, and new ways to do things has only grown in importance for both Congress and the administration.
Amidst this drama, two distinguished lawmakers have proposed a set of policies to reduce unnecessary costs and streamline government: The Unified Savings and Accountability (USA) Act, which seeks to reduce federal spending based upon annual GAO reports examining program fragmentation, overlap, and duplication. Included in the USA Act are proposals such as reforming federal contracting procedures, consolidating federal data centers, and replacing the $1 note with a $1 coin.
The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) hosted a discussion on the USA Act and other measures to produce more effective and efficient federal spending.
