Investing in global health by targeting widespread diseases can not only produce tremendous public health gains, but serve as an enormously effective diplomatic tool. In a recently released Bipartisan Policy Center study, former Senators Tom Daschle and Bill Frist show how the president’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has both saved the lives of millions and bolstered the stability, security, and socio-economic development of vulnerable countries leading to better regional stability, viable trade partnerships, and goodwill toward the United States. They call this strategic health diplomacy: the recognition that global health programs can and should be a critical component of U.S. national security toolbox.
Daschle and Frist hosted a conference on the concept and future applications of strategic health diplomacy. Panels, including current and former U.S. government officials, military leaders, and international voices, discussed successful uses of strategic health diplomacy, the national security benefits of global health programs, and areas of future strategic health diplomacy.
