Working to find actionable solutions to the nation's key challenges.

On Wednesday, July 12, at 12 p.m., ET, BPC is hosting a media call with members of its Governors’ Council to discuss their recommendations for President Donald Trump’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis.

Former governors Mike Beebe (AR), Steven Beshear (KY), Jim Douglas (VT), Chris Gregoire (WA), and Linda Lingle (HI), sent a letter of recommendations to the White House and to the Chair of the Commission, Gov. Chris Christie.

They will discuss their recommendations with Gov. Christie at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday before the media call. BPC’s recommendations come at a critical time, as Trump’s Opioid Crisis Commission is expected to release its interim report on Monday, July 17.

The CDC has recently reported the amount of opioids prescribed per person was three times higher in 2015 than in 1999. To address the growing crisis, the governors outlined three main themes in their letter of recommendations: curb the supply of opioids, both prescribed and illegally trafficked; support access to treatment and support recovery; and address the stigma attached to those suffering from substance use disorders by promoting evidence-based policies.
