Today’s event featured Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner George Apostolakis who provided an overview of NRC risk assessment approaches and initial findings of the NRC Task Force’s 90-Day Report. Commissioner Apostolakis’s slides are available here, and include a summary of his views on Fukushima insights.
Dr. Pete Miller moderated a lively panel discussion on a wide range of issues including reactions to the NRC Task Force’s 90-Day Report; implications for nuclear power around the world given recent announcements by Germany and others; the need to ensure robust safety systems in other country’s nuclear industries (particularly new players); and the interaction of nuclear and natural gas fired generation in the US electric power sector. The panel featured four nuclear experts representing diverse perspectives:
- Dr. Tom Cochran, Senior Scientist Consultant, Nuclear Program, NRDC
- Dr. Michael Corradini, Director, Wisconsin Institute of Nuclear Systems, U. of Wisc.
- Jim Ferland, President, Americas, Westinghouse Electric Company
- Charles “Chip” Pardee, Chief Operating Officer, Exelon Generation.
The Nuclear Initiative will hold its next event in October on nuclear nonproliferation and Effective Approaches for U.S. Participation in a More Secure Global Nuclear Market.
