Daschle and Lott ride again

Former Sen. Tom Daschle returns to his alma mater tomorrow, and he’s bringing another former Senate leader with him.

Daschle will be joined by Trent Lott Wednesday night at South Dakota State University to discuss the issue of bipartisanship in Congress. Daschle and Lott – a Republican who represented Mississippi – were counterparts in the Senate as majority/minority leaders.

Daschle and Lott have remained on good terms following the end of their political careers – which came in 2005 and 2007 respectively. They serve on the Bipartisan Policy Center, a nonprofit group that supports bipartisanship through analysis, negotiation and dialogue. The title of their talk is “How much partisanship is too much?”

The event is actually the first in what is being billed as the Daschle Dialogue series at SDSU. Daschle, said Steve Erpenbach, the president and CEO of the South Dakota State University Foundation, has the connections to bring in high-caliber speakers to SDSU that might otherwise not make it to South Dakota.
