Iran Initiative

“[W]e are… developing a strategy to use all elements of American power to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon." -Barack Obama, Camp LeJeune, N.C., February 27, 2009

Iran’s nuclear weapons program poses the most urgent national security threat to the United States. BPC’s Foreign Policy Project has conducted rigorous analysis of the growing threat of a nuclear Iran since 2007. Over the past five years, former Senator Charles Robb (D-VA) and General (ret.) Charles Wald have led a group of prominent bipartisan experts who have developed a comprehensive strategy for preventing a nuclear Iran.

Since 2008, the project’s reports have consistently asserted that a nuclear weapons-capable Iran would be “strategically untenable” for the United States. Their five reports and accompanying white papers, published articles and op-eds, and other analyses have recommended a triple-track strategy: simultaneous pursuit of diplomacy, tough sanctions and credible and visible preparations for a military option of last resort.
