Washington, D.C. - The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) is pleased to announce the addition of former Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND). Senator Dorgan joins the BPC as a Senior Fellow after serving for a total of thirty years in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. In his new role at the BPC, Senator Dorgan will be working on a number of issues with a specific emphasis on energy policy.

“Senator Dorgan has had a remarkable career, having served for 40 years in public office at the federal and state levels,” said BPC President Jason Grumet. “During his time in Congress, he was a champion for clean energy and energy security. Senator Dorgan has also has been a vocal advocate for tax reform and is an avid supporter of investment in science and research. This commitment is evident in the creation of the Red River Research Corridor, whose cutting edge research is well-known across the nation. We welcome the Senator’s expertise in these and other areas.”

Senator Dorgan served in the Senate from 1993-2011. He served in Senate leadership for the past 16 years, first as Assistant Democratic Floor Leader and then as Chairman of the Democratic Policy Committee. During that time, Senator Dorgan also served on the Appropriations, Energy and Natural Resources, and Commerce Committees. He was Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, as well as the subcommittees on Energy and Water (Appropriations) and Aviation (Commerce). Before being elected to the Senate, he represented North Dakota’s at-large congressional district from 1981-1992, where he served on the House Ways and Means Committee.

Throughout his career, Senator Dorgan has worked across party lines on the key issues facing the nation, and we look forward to his creative insights and pragmatic guidance as we work to advance effective public policy solutions here at the BPC,” said Grumet.

Senator Dorgan is one of many former Members who have recently joined the BPC as Senior Fellows. This bipartisan group includes former Senators Bob Bennett and Pete Domenici, former Senate Majority Leaders Bill Frist and Trent Lott, former Secretary of Agriculture and Congressman Dan Glickman, and former National Security Advisor General Jim Jones.
