Health-care spending vs. health

The health-care system isn’t what makes us healthy. It’s where we go once we’re sick. And it’s where we spend all our money.

So what should we do about it? The BPC has a slew of recommendations here. In 2009, I argued that one of the biggest impediments to spending money on programs that make people healthier — such as, oddly enough, early childhood education — is that we’re spending so much money taking care of people when they’re sick. The piece holds up pretty well, I think.
