Dent, Schwartz urge supercommittee to go big

Steve Bell, a senior economic expert at the Bipartisan Policy Center, said the letter shows a realization among some lawmakers, particularly Republicans, that they need to start saying "yes" more often than "no." But Bell was skeptical because it lacks specifics.

"I believe there are people on that letter when faced with increases on taxes, or fundamental changes to Medicare, would vote no on those changes," Bell said.

When asked about scaling back tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans, Dent shifted and said he'd like to reform the tax code by broadening the tax base, lowering marginal rates and closing some tax loopholes. "My preference is revenue neutrality, but if we do a comprehensive reform of the tax code that spurs economic growth, that will yield revenue," he said.
