Dan Glickman Moderates Healthy Farms/Healthy People Panel at 2014 Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders’ Annual Forum

The worlds of farm policy and food policy often operate in silos, though there is more alignment between their goals than is regularly recognized, and efforts to promote this alignment are increasing. At the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Funders’ 12th Annual Forum on June 17 in Denver, Colorado, the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative (NPAI) released a handout that highlighted some of the many ongoing federal grants and pilot programs that support both healthy farms and healthy people. This resource highlights ten programs that focus on promoting the sale of local foods and specialty crops, ensuring access to healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, and increasing demand for specialty crops through incentives and educational programs.

At the Forum, former Secretary of Agriculture and NPAI co-chair Dan Glickman moderated a panel entitled, “Healthy Farms and Healthy People: Opportunities to Align Food and Farm Policy with the Goal of Healthier Americans,” hosted by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Foundation. Joining him on the panel were Robin Schepper, Senior Advisor to NPAI and former Executive Director of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Initiative, and Jeff Dunn, President and CEO of Bolthouse Farms.
