The Wit and Humor of Senator Bob Dole

“In a stunning admission on ‘Larry King Live’ last night, Bob Dole revealed he is one of the test subjects for Viagra. He said on Larry King, ‘I wish I had bought stock in it.’ Only a Republican would think the best part of Viagra is the fact that you could make money off of it.” – Bob Dole, from his book Great Political Wit

BPC Co-founder and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole accomplished many things throughout his career, but one thing he rarely gets credit for is his sense of humor. In an institution as stereotypically stiff as the United States Senate, Bob Dole was a revelation. By nearly any standard, Senator Bob Dole is a very funny man. Senator Dole is the author of two books on political humor. In Great Political Wit: Laughing (Almost) All the Way to the White House, Senator Dole shares his favorite political quotes and anecdotes about various topics. His second book, Great Presidential Wit: I Wish I Was in the Book, ranks our presidents by their sense of humor.

His quick wit and the fact that he never took himself too seriously made Senator Dole an ideal television guest, particularly after he retired from the Senate. Here are some of the appearances that that showcase his trademark humor.

As a former nominee for vice president and a Senate Majority Leader, Senator Dole was and remains a central figure in American politics. But becoming his party’s nominee for president in 1996 definitely took Senator Dole’s status to a new, higher level. Senator Dole’s definitive appearance, deadpan delivery, and habit of referring to himself in the third person made him an easy target for comedy writers. Below is a collection of clips that illustrate Senator Dole’s prominent and important role in popular culture.
