Who: John Fortier, Director of the Democracy Project
What: Voting Rights after Shelby County v. Holder: In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder, a case that presented a constitutional challenge to Section Five of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Brookings Institution hosts a forum to discuss the implications of the ruling. Section Five requires certain “covered” states and localities with a history of race-based discrimination in voting to seek federal permission for changes in their voting laws. Shelby County argued that Congress exceeded its powers to enforce civil rights by failing to update the “coverage formula” to account for changes as to which jurisdictions pose the greatest threats to minority voting rights.

Who: Bipartisan Policy Center President Jason Grumet, Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and co-chair of BPC’s Immigration Task Force, and Alberto Cardenas, chairman of the American Conservative Union and member of BPC’s Immigration Task Force.
What: Can We Get Past Politics to Reform Immigration?: This panel will bring together politically diverse individuals with a unique and extensive understanding of national and political party politics. Through a bipartisan examination of the changing demographics of our nation and our voting populace, panelists will explore the impacts of the ongoing immigration reform debate on their own political parties, and the future of national politics.

What: The Evolving Immigration Debate: Securing our Borders and Enforcing our Laws: As Congress grapples with immigration reform, border security remains a critical component of the debate. Many in Congress—and around the country—consider securing our southern border and effectively enforcing our immigration laws essential to reforming our immigration system. Join BPC for a conversation on border security, its role in reform and the implications for border communities. The event is part of BPC’s Immigration Task Force, led by former Governors Haley Barbour and Ed Rendell and former Secretaries Condoleezza Rice and Henry Cisneros.

Who: BPC’s Commission on Political Reform
What: The Commission on Political Reform (CPR) will hold its second in a series of National Conversations on American Unity in partnership with the National Constitution Center and USA TODAY in Philadelphia. Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell will join CPR co-chairs Secretary Dan Glickman, Governor Dirk Kempthorne, Senator Trent Lott, and Senator Olympia Snowe for discussions on public service. The event will convene former elected officials, community, business, and public service leaders for a town hall meeting. The discussion will examine ways in which Americans are serving their country, current barriers to participation in elective politics, and will analyze how political polarization is discouraging citizens of all ages from engaging in our democratic process.
